MSL 2011 : Kedah Add On To Perlis’ Misery
Visitors Kedah FA edged Perlis FA 1-0 at the Utama Stadium here in the only Malaysian Super League match played Friday, to pile the misery for Perlis.
Kedah, facing the bottom of the league side, earned a penalty in the 29th minute that was put away by Baddrol Bakhtiar after Perlis goalkeeper Mohd Amirul Rosli had brought down Mohd Khyril Muhymeen inside the box.
The win saw Kedah move up to fifth sport in the league table behind leader Selangor FA, Perak FA, Kelantan FA and Felda United FC, respectively.
The bruising encounter between the Northern rivals saw referee Shamsuddin Ibrahim flash five yellow cards in the match, three to Kedah FA players and two to the home team.
Perlis FA, rooted at the bottom of the table, after having played 10 matches, have yet to win a match although the Northern side had earned three draws.
MSL 2011 : Nasib Pasukan Kedah
SELEPAS timbul dakwaan pemain Pulau Pinang menjual perlawanan dan kemerosotan prestasi pasukan Perlis, kini tiba giliran skuad Hijau Kuning dihimpit kemelut dalaman sehingga memaksa Persatuan Bola Sepak Kedah (KFA) merehatkan Ketua Jurulatihnya, Ahmad Yusof.
MSL 2011 Md3 : Sabah FA (1) – (0) Kedah FA
KOTA KINABALU: Mohd Farid Ideris’ solitary strike helped Sabah FA notch their first Malaysian Super League win after defeating Kedah FA at the Likas Stadium last night.
The lanky striker struck the only goal from just outside the box after picking up a clearance from the Kedah keeper Muhd Al-Hafiz Hamzah.
It started from M. Sivakumar who sent a long ball into the Kedah penalty box, and the hardworking Zainizam Marjan challenged, but the keeper managed to palm the ball away and Farid unleashed a first-timer that went into the back of the net.
But the victory came at a heavy price for Sabah, as utility player, Sivakumar limped out of the game with a broken right leg after getting a hard tackle from Mohd Faizal Abdul Bakar, who was shown his second yellow, to eventually see him getting the marching orders in the 77th minute. Earlier, he was shown the yellow card for a foul on Sabri Sahar.
It could have been 2-0 for Sabah, but unfortunately, Sumardi Hajalan failed to convert a penalty kick as his shot hit the right side of the goalpost.
It was a deserving win for the home side as they put on a convincing show that definitely delighted the about three thousand fans that turned up for the clash despite the downpour.
Sabah were the first to try Kedah’s custodian but Farid’s grounder went wide.
This was followed by Kedah where Mohd Faizal’s glancing header hit the goalpost.
Then Mohd Sabree Mat Abu saw his close range attempt blocked by Sabah custodian Azizon Abd Kadir.
In the 29th minute, Sabah were denied what was seen as a sure penalty when Zainizam Marjan was brought down by Mohd Fauzi Nan inside the box, but the match official Shokri Nor from Penang instead awarded Sabah a corner kick.
Then in the 50th minute, Sabah were presented with a golden opportunity to extend their lead when this time Shokri pointed to the spot after Farid was fouled inside the box by V. Thirumurugan.
Sumardi stepped up to take the spot kick that hit the goalpost.
In the 56th minute, Kedah squandered another opportunity as Wan Mohd Asyraf Wan Ali failed to connect a cross with Azizon already beaten.
Then Zainizam Marjan saw his close range diving header go wide.
In injury time, Kedah managed to put the ball into the back of the Sabah net but fortunately for the home side, it was disallowed after Mohd Sabree was adjudged to have fouled Azizon before he shot at goal.
Sabah’s next tie is at home to Johor FC on Tuesday.
Kedah and Negri Sembilan march into the semi-finals
ALOR SETAR: Kedah marched into the Malaysia Cup semi-finals with a thumping 3-0 win over Terengganu at the Darulaman Stadium last night.
Kedah, who advanced with a 5-2 aggregate quarter-final win, will take on Kelantan in the last four. Kelantan had defeated Selangor 3-0 on aggregate on Friday.
The Canaries, frustrated by last year’s semi-finalists in the first half, turned on the style after the break to score through Badrol Bakhtiar (61st minute), Mohd Sabre Mat Abu (68th) and Mohd Khyril Muhymeen (83rd).
Kedah opened accounts when Mohd Faisal Bakar slipped a through pass to Mohd Khyril, who unleashed a stinger which came off goalkeeper Mohd Sharbinee Allawee. The lurking Badrol pounced on the loose ball to slot home.
Sharbinee was later stretchered out after being injured when he tried to stop Mohd Khyril’s attempt. He was replaced by Mohd Sharmirza Yusoff.
Seven minutes later the Canaries doubled their lead when Mohd Sabre’s glancing header off a Badrol cross caught Mohd Sharmirza wrong footed.
Mohd Khyril then delivered the final blow off a free kick in the 83rd minute when he coolly chipped the ball past Mohd Sharmiza.
Kedah, however, ended the match with 10 men when Khairul Helmi was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 89th minute. He will now miss the first leg of the semi-final Wednesday.
In Kangar, there was no stopping defending champions Negri Sembilan as they stormed to a convincing 3-1 win over Perlis in the return-leg match at Stadium Utama.
Abdul Halim Zainal was the toast for the Deer as he scored a brace to guide them to a 4-1 aggregate win.
Halim scored in the 24th and 41st minutes before Mohd Shukor Adan completed the job with the third goal in the 75th minute.
Perlis scored a consolation goal in the dying minutes through Azrul Azman.
Play was, however, stopped for a few minutes in the first half when a fan threw a brick onto the pitch. Fortunately, no one was hit and play resumed after security was tightened.
Negri will play Johor FC in the semi-finals.
Johor FC lost 2-1 to Pahang at the Darulmakmur Stadium in Kuantan but qualified on the away goal rule after both teams drew 2-2 on aggregate.
Former international Eddie Helmi Abdul Manan put the club side ahead in the 50th minute with a fine solo effort but the Elephants bounced back with goals from Shahrizak Salleh (65th) and Faizol Hussain (68th).
Pahang had earlier been reduced to 10 men when Mohd Shahrul Norsham was sent off in the 60th minute.

Kedah lost to KL Plus 2-3
Johor FC, who are in second position in the table, failed to narrow the gap with Super League leader Selangor when they went down 0-1 to the T-Team at Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium in Kuala Terengganu on Tuesday.
Abdul Hadi Yahya’s solitary goal in the 42nd minute caused Johor FC to be stuck with 22 points while Selangor remained at the top of the table with 26 points.
The defeat also resulted in Johor FC plummeted to the fourth place after Terengganu and Kelantan defeated their opponents.
Terengganu went on a goal-scoring spree when they beat Johor 6-3 at Tan Sri Hassan Yunos Stadium in Johor Baharu to claim the second position with 23 points.
On the other hand, Kelantan beat Kuala Lumpur 3-0 at Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium in Kota Baharu.
Elsewhere, FA Cup champion Negeri Sembilan lost to Perak 1-2 at Perak Stadium in Ipoh while FA Cup runners-up Kedah lost to KL Plus 2-3 at Darulaman Stadium in Alor Setar.
Injuries, ban thrust Shafiq into limelight with Kedah
Three years ago, Shafiq Jamal was just another face on the bench when Kedah edged neighbours Perlis 4-2 on penalties (0-0 in regulation time) in the FA Cup final at the State Stadium in Batu Kawan.
The following year, he came on as a substitute when the Canaries played Selangor in the FA Cup final. And he rewarded then coach Mohd Azraai Khor’s faith in him by netting the third goal in Kedah’s 3-2 win over Selangor.
This year, thanks to injuries (Samransak Kram and Farizal Rozali) and suspension (Azlan Ismail) to the seniors in the team, the 22-year-old Shafiq has found himself thrust into the limelight and he is cherishing every moment of his romance with the FA Cup.
His love affair with the Cup reaches its climax on Saturday when Kedah take on Negri Sembilan in the final at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
And Shafiq is now eager to carry out the role entrusted to him by coach Ahmad Yusof to perfection, like how he scored the all-important second goal in the 2-1 win over Terengganu in the semi-final, return leg last Saturday for a 4-1 aggregate triumph.
The former national Under-20 striker, however, was quick to warn his team-mates to be prepared to work hard if they wanted to overcome an experienced Negri Sembilan side packed with current and former national players.
“They have experienced players like Shukor Adan, Mohd Aidil Zafuan and Ching Hong Aik in defence. Then, in attack, they can count on national striker Mohd Zaquan Adha,” said Shafiq.
“Luckily, we have played them before in the League and we know what we are up against and we will be better prepared this time.”
Newcastle United’s title push starts with Blackpool win urges Steve Harper
Newcastle United keeper Steve Harper is desperate to collect a Coca-Cola Championship winner’s medal as well as return to the Barclays Premier League.
Harper has called on his teammates to ensure they pick up the points needed to repel West Brom’s challenge, starting with a win at home to Ian Holloway’s play-off chasing Blackpool on Saturday.
Speaking on the Give Me Football site, the 35-year-old said: “We have got to see it through now. We need six or seven points, so that’s the next aim, starting on Saturday.”
He added: “To bounce back at the first opportunity is a big achievement, to be promoted with six games left is fantastic and testament to a lot of hard work from the manager, his staff, everybody behind the scenes and the players in that dressing room.
“There will be some celebrating for a couple of days before we get our minds back on the job.
“We have achieved our first aim, now we have got to achieve the next one, which is to go on and win the league.”
Negeri Sembilan And Kedah Equally Poised – Rajagobal
Negeri Sembilan and Kedah both have equal chances since both have capable players in their stables and equally poised said National coach K. Rajagobal.
Rajagobal, a former Selangor stalwart said any team that qualified for the final would have their own strength and capable of winning the cup.
“Negeri Sembilan has some experienced players in Rizal Zambry Yahya, Idris Karim, Ching Hong Aik, Mohamad Aidil Zafuan Abdul Razak and Mohamad Zaquan Adha Abdul Razak.
“On the other hand, Kedah have players like Baddrol Bakhtiar, Mohd Khyril Muhyameen Zambri, Mohd Azmi Muslim and Mohd Hemli Eliza Elias,” Rajagobal told Bernama when asked to pick his choice for the FA Cup final between Negeri Sembilan and Kedah at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Saturday.
He added that even some of the young players in both teams were no pushovers since some of them had represented the national team.
“What is important is for a team to be well organised and play with determination and commitment to win,” he said.
Rajagobal who let the National team to the SEA Games gold medal in Laos after a 20-year hiatus said the fact that both teams have experienced coaches was another factor that leaves little room for separation between the two.
“Negeri Sembilan coach Wan Jamak Wan Hassan, a former international, is an experienced coach since he was also the former National coach while Ahmad Yusof who is also an ex-international, is also vastly experienced,” he said.
Negeri Sembilan, 2003 FA Cup winner, advanced to the final after edging defending champion Selangor on away goals rule when both teams were tied 2-2 on aggregate after two legs (Negeri won 2-1 in Shah Alam).
Kedah, the treble winner in 2007/2008 season, showed their prowess by beating Terengganu 4-1 on aggregate.
Meanwhile, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak announced that the state would reward the players if they won the FA Cup, but did not reveal what the incentives were.
Azizan however, announced that the state would reward the victorious team that won the Super League, FA Cup and Malaysia Cup during the 2007/2008 season, with bungalow lots at Bandar Sejahtera, Pokok Sena.
He added that the incentive was the state government’s reward for the players who were under coach Azraai Khor Abdullah and officials in the team.
Ahmad hails his young and versatile Canaries
ALOR SETAR: Kedah are through to the final of the FA Cup competition and coach Ahmad Yusof is taking satisfaction in seeing his young team grow in strength and maturity.
Ahmad, who is in his first season with the Canaries, said yesterday that the team had improved tremendously, particularly in their attacking approach, as seen in their 4-1 aggregate semi-final victory over Terengganu.
“In the two-leg tie against a very tough Terengganu side, we showed that we no longer depend on just one particular player to get the goals,” said the former Pahang coach.
“There was a stage when we depended heavily on Azlan (Ismail) to deliver. We can now count on several other players, among them Baddrol (Bakhtiar), Shafiq (Jamal) and even defender Khairul Helmi (Johari).”
Azlan played a big hand in Kedah’s win over Terengganu in the first-leg match, scoring one of the goals in the 2-0 win in Kuala Terengganu last Tuesday.
But an additional four-match suspension slapped on him by the FA of Malaysia for ungentlemanly conduct in the quarter-final first-leg match against Armed Forces put him out of the return match at the Darulaman Stadium here.
Without Azlan’s services, the Canaries still managed to score another two goals for a 2-1 win over the Turtles with Khairul Helmi and Shafiq finding the mark and Baddrol having a hand in both the goals.
Although Kedah defeated Terengganu convincingly, Ahmad voiced concern over the complacency that crept into the team after they went 4-0 up on aggregate.
“They took things a little too easy. Such attitude is unhealthy and can be disastrous if left unchecked,” he said.
“We were punished the moment we let our guard down. Terengganu pulled one back and threatened to overcome the deficit.”
The Canaries will take a two-day break before Ahmad gets down to work again to prepare the team for the final against Negri Sembilan at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Saturday.
